⚠ THE NOPE

It replaces: Plastic cutting boards. Chopping on a polyethylene board grinds an estimated 14–79 million microplastics per year directly into food, per a 2023 study.

WHY IT'S A YEP

  • Wood fibers swell and close cut marks — the board self-heals instead of shedding
  • Teak's natural oils make it low-maintenance by wood-board standards
  • Kinder to knife edges than plastic or bamboo
  • One board replaces the warped plastic stack forever

WHERE IT'S IMPERFECT

  • Hand wash only; an occasional mineral-oil rub keeps it sealed
  • Heavier than plastic (this is also why it doesn't skate around)
  • Raw-chicken people: keep a second small board and wash with hot soapy water like you should anyway

Our take

The cutting board is the sneakiest item in the kitchen file — it sheds with literally every meal you prep, no heat required. Wood fixes the mechanism itself: studies on wood boards show cut marks close as fibers swell, and bacteria don’t fare better on wood than plastic (that old myth ran the other way). Oil it when it looks thirsty and it’s a decade-plus tool.
