It solves the plastic question the simple way: the brewer is glass, and the only other parts, a wood collar and a leather tie, sit on the outside. The 8-cup size brews 40 ounces, the same batch as the automatic machines we compared.
The trade is effort. You heat water in a pot or kettle and pour it yourself, and nothing keeps the coffee warm afterward. Chemex’s own paper filters are an ongoing cost. If you need a machine that brews on its own, look at the automatic options in the guide instead.
