The free moves
- Stop buying bottled water. Today. The 240k number above is the average; heat-cycled bottles (delivery trucks, your trunk, the garage flat) run worse.
- Never reuse or warm single-use PET bottles. They’re engineered for one cold use.
- Check your municipal water report (search “[your city] consumer confidence report”) so you know what else you’re filtering for — it changes which filter makes sense.
Under $100
- Insulated steel bottle — ends the single-use cycle on day one and keeps water actually cold.
- NSF/ANSI 401-certified glass pitcher — 401 is the certification that includes a verified microplastics-reduction claim. Glass vessel, certified filter, ~$65.
- Clearly Filtered pitcher — broader contaminant list with published independent lab data (company-commissioned — we say so plainly; it’s a tier below formal certification).
Worth the investment
- Countertop reverse osmosis — the endgame. RO pores are thousands of times smaller than even nanoplastics; it also removes PFAS and lead. No plumber, ~$350 once, ~$100/year in filters. A family quitting bottled water typically breaks even inside a year.
The honest asterisk
Most filters and RO units are partly plastic themselves. Cold-water contact sheds a tiny fraction of what heat causes — the math still favors filtering by miles — but if it bugs you, glass-carafe RO models exist and we flag them in the product files.
What you can ignore
“Raw water,” alkaline marketing, crystal-infused anything. Filtration is physics; the membrane size does the work. Buy certifications, not adjectives.
