Hach Total Hardness Test Strips, 0-425 mg/L

Dip-and-read strips for total water hardness, to see whether boiling is likely to do much for your water.

Source-reviewed $ · indicative price band SKU 2745250 Reviewed

Price & availability: $21.65 for 50 strips at lab-supply retailers such as Forestry Suppliers on September 26, 2026; Hach quotes its own price on request.

Why consider it

  • Hach lists a total hardness range of 0 to 425 mg/L.
  • A bottle holds 50 strips.
  • Hach describes the strips as quick field and lab screening that needs no setup or cleanup.

Practical tradeoffs

  • Readings come from color steps (0, 25, 50, 120, 250 and 425 ppm, per Forestry Suppliers), so they give a range rather than an exact number.
  • They measure hardness only, not lead, bacteria or plastic.
  • Your water utility may already publish hardness for free.

Our assessment

This is a manufacturer-document review of a test kit, not a lab comparison. Hach lists a 0 to 425 mg/L range for total hardness, and a retailer’s listing shows six color steps across it. That is enough to tell soft water from hard water, which is the question that matters for boiling.

If your utility’s water quality report already gives a hardness number, you don’t need the strips.
