notes from two parents getting microplastics out of the house — honest swaps, real studies

ROOM GUIDE — LAUNDRY & CLOSET

Stop the fiber firehose

You wear plastic, and it sheds — into the water system and your indoor air. Washing habits are free; a filter catches the rest.

⚠ THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS

A single 6 kg load of synthetic laundry can release on the order of 700,000 microfibers into wastewater.

Roughly two-thirds of modern clothing is plastic — polyester, nylon, acrylic — and every wear and wash sheds fibers. Laundry microfibers are one of the largest sources of environmental microplastic, and the same fibers become a big share of the dust you breathe at home. You don’t need a new wardrobe; you need new defaults.

The free moves

  • Wash cold. Hot water accelerates fiber release (and shrinks your power bill).
  • Wash full loads. Less garment-on-garment friction per item.
  • Wash less often. Athletic wear that got lightly worn can air out and go again.
  • Skip the dryer for synthetics. Heat + tumbling is a fiber confetti machine — and dryer vents blow it outdoors or, worse, leak it indoors. Line-dry the polyester.
  • Slow your buying. The next purchase is the cheapest place to change your closet: cotton, wool, linen, hemp.

Under $50

  • Guppyfriend wash bag — synthetics go in the bag, the bag traps a large share of fibers before they reach the drain. Empty the lint into the trash, not the sink.

Worth the investment

  • Filtrol external washer filter — installs on the discharge hose and captures ~89% of microfibers (company-tested) from every load, bagged or not. The whole-machine fix; also the answer for septic systems.

What you can ignore

You do not need to throw away your existing wardrobe — manufacturing new clothes to replace working clothes is its own footprint. Run the synthetics you own through better habits and a filter, and buy natural when things genuinely wear out.
